I think all of us adults can agree that Katy Perry is terrible. I also think that we, again “we” means adults, can agree that Michael Jackson is more talented* and more important to the history of popular music than Katy Perry is/was/will ever be. That being said, if Katy Perry’s current single, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” hits number one she will have tied Michael Jackson for most number one singles off of one album.
Now, I think we all realize that this is just a symptom of our current musical landscape. Anyone that would honestly argue that Teenage Dream is a better album than Jackson’s Bad is either a drunk girl in a bar or a ten year old. Something has to be number one and since little kids are the only ones who buy music anymore, the stuff they like is usually going to be at the top of the charts. That just the way it is and I have come to accept it.
My issue is that hundreds of years from now when Rolling Stone, or whoever, is forming its next “Greatest Albums Ever” or “Top 100 People Who Sing Songs” lists they will look back and just take into account the numbers alone and accidentally put Katy Perry on the same level with artists who actually have talent and interesting and important things to say.
What can be done to stop this travesty? Most likely nothing, which is the worst part. Radio is going to play it so all the girls at the local middle school are going to download it. It feels inevitable (its already jumped to #4). But just remember, when the history books are updated, next to Michael’s Jackson’s name is going to be the name of the girl who sang (I almost said “wrote.” Hilarious!) the lyrics, “The girl’s a freak/She drives a Jeep/and lives on the beach.” Good job America.
Below I have posted the video for “Smooth Criminal,” also off of the album Bad. This is one of the few songs on the album that didn’t make it to number one. See the difference?

*Let it be known that I am just talking about Michael Jackson as an artist. For the sake of this article please try to ignore that fact that he was most likely a little boy toucher.
