Do you guys know who Terius Nash is? Maybe you know him by his stage name, The-Dream? Anyone? If you want to know what the next monster pop hit is going to be, just find out who he is working with. Nash has written some of the biggest pop hits in the last few years and at the same time released three terrific solo albums (the fourth is due later this year). The guy is a workhorse. Here is a very abbreviated list of songs he has written or co-written (complete list here). See if you recognize any of them.
- Beyonce – Single Ladies and Run the World (Girls)
- Rihanna – Umbrella
- Britney Spears – Me Against the Music
- Justin Bieber – Baby
- J. Holiday – Bed
- Jamie Foxx – Just Like Me
- Jessie McCartney – Leavin’
- Mariah Carey – Touch My Body
So, they are not all my cup of tea but you can’t deny that they are some huge hits in there. What impresses me the most is that he doesn’t save any of these songs for himself. His solo output is much more oddball and takes it’s cues more from Prince than from modern day pop acts. Personally, his last album, Love King, is one of my favorite albums from 2010 and I am not one to listen to much R&B.
Posted below are tracks 6, 7, and 8 off of Love King. They were recorded as a three song suite and here they are in one epic 12 min music video. Its kind of a Prince tribute. “Yamaha” is his version of “Little Red Corvette,” “Nikki pt 2” is the sequel to Prince’s “Darling Nikki,” and “Abyss” is reminiscent of the Purple One’s funky ballads like “When Doves Cry.” Enjoy.
