I think Ty Segall is the best choice to replace Jay Reatard, after his untimely death, at the top of the garage rock heap. His mix of fuzzed out guitar and simple, yet relatable lyrics make him very engaging. His former band, the synth-punkers Epsilons, showed promise but their sheer brattiness just made them sound immature and forgettable. As a solo act Segall takes cues from 60’s garage rock bands like The Sonics and The Seeds (bands that I love). This is his newest is called “You Make the Sun Fry,” off his newest album Goodbye Bread, which will drop June 21 on Drag City.
