For the most part I feel that modern hip hop is boring and lazy. Rappers seem to spend most of their time thinking of new things to encrust with jewels than actually working to create intelligent, relevant music. Writing a radio ready song seems pretty easy: sex, money, probably something about the club, repeat. Very thought provoking guys.
That’s why I get excited real excited when find an artist who seems to be putting the effort in to advance his/her art. Shabazz Palaces is Ishmael Butler but hip hop classicist may recognize the name from when he performed with Digable Planets in the early 90’s. Now he creates very radio unfriendly songs that range for the dubstep infused “An Echo From The Hosts That Profess Infinitum” to the snare heavy, off kilter “32 Leaves Dipped in Blackness Making Clouds Forming Altered Carbon.” In five years most of the rap music created today will be forgotten but Shabazz Palaces will be influencing artists for years. The recent Sub Pop signee’s album is out in June.
